I went to Australia to dive the Great Barrier and Ningaloo Reefs. When I hit Western Australia (or WA, as locals refer to it), I decided to spend a few days in Perth. I checked out the markets and shops in the groovy Fremantle neighborhood, stopping for a beer at the famous Little Creatures Brewery.
I ate and drank my way through Swan Valley’s over 150 wineries, breweries, and shops, including Yahava KoffeeWorks, Lancaster Wines, Margaret River Providore, Edgecombe Brothers, and House of Honey. I swam with wild dolphins in Rockingham and visited the quokkas on Rottnest Island. "[W]hen it comes to the food, Perth is perfect."
But I’m not going to lie. What I did more than anything was eat at restaurant after amazing restaurant. Here are a few of my top picks for Perth dining:
The Beaufort Street Merchant has a European vibe with its closely packed tables and glass cabinet full of pastries tempting you the minute you walk in the door. The menu offerings are nearly impossible to choose from, but I would tell you not to miss the brisket sandwich that was massive and mouth-watering and the pig cheeks, which were tender and tasty. Leaving room for dessert is a no-brainer with their homemade donuts and local twist on bananas Foster.
I know people throw this expression around all too often, but I would seriously travel halfway around again the world just to eat at Apple Daily Bar & Eating House in Print Hall. Even though it’s a shared plates-kind-of-place and I was there alone, I threw caution to the wind and ordered big any way. I indulged in the crispy soft shell crab with watercress, pomelo, and nam jim; the saltwater duck with spring onion, flower bun, and hoisin; the pad Thai prawns with sweet pork and chili jam; ten hour braised short rib with kimchi and ssamjang; steamed jasmine rice; fresh mango; sticky rice; coconut sorbet, and salted peanuts. Each dish was delicately and impeccably prepared. The best part about Apple Daily Bar is the inventiveness with which they craft their dishes, blending flavors and textures in an often surprising and always delicious way.
Another fun place to eat is Bread in Common. This time, I had a partner in crime and we did it up right, sharing the mozzarella with basil, wild pepper, and olive oil; heirloom tomatoes with Dijon, basil, shallots, ashed salt, Barramundi tomatoes, jalapenos, capers, and basil; lamb ribs dressed in mint, chili, and black garlic; aerated chocolate with financier, mint, raspberry, and almond; banana with meringue, rosemary, marshmallow, and caramel.
One of my forever favorites from here forward is Moore and Moore Café in Freemantle. I went there for breakfast and ordered the Little Pot of Moore (a Tuscan style breakfast) that’s comprised of roasted capsicum peppers, garlic, tomato, herbs, and pesto topped with an egg, thyme, and parmesan served in a hot pot with Turkish toast and meatballs. I could not believe how such a simple combination could be so insanely delicious and satisfying. I would love to learn how to make that little number, although I doubt I could duplicate it respectably.
“I heard you like your drinks strong,” the bartender at Stables Bar says as he brings me my drink. “Strong and sweet.” The waiter apparently shared my sentiments with the handsome man now at my table with a Mad Hatter in hand, comprised of whisky, Disaronno, spiced rum, and maple syrup. It was picy, sweet, and perfectly garnished with passion fruit and an orange peel, but be sure to ask for it as it’s an off-menu specialty. As for food, I ordered the smoked organic beef brisket tacos with chipotle and iceberg lettuce; lamb shank ragu with orecchiette pasta and whipped Danish feta; the Stables wagon wheel with dark chocolate, strawberry, and marshmallow. It’s a deconstructed confection with marshmallow puffs that look deceivingly like meringues, chocolaty mouse fudge with just the teeniest bit of delicious salt on top, chocolate crumbles, and a not-so sweet but not quite savory strawberry sorbet. It was a like an exploration of flavors, textures, tastes, colors, and temperatures.
I have become a big fan of the Pimms cup. When I visited the Trustee Bar & Bistro, I ordered up the Pimms winter cup, which they make with Pimms liqueur, lime, mint, cucumber, apple, and ginger ale. It was classic, crisp, and bright. Since I’m a huge fan of brisket (if you couldn’t already tell), I started with the pressed brisket parcel with baby pears, cauliflower, cauliflower purée, currants, and pickled apricot,s and chose the duck confit with puy green lentil tomato cassoulet for my main. You cannot go wrong with carefully cooked confit and the Trustee has it down. For dessert, I splurged on the Trustee beignets with bay leaf anglaise and caramel. Those sweet little dumplings almost made me cry. I had to push the plate away before I went into super-sweet, deliciousness overload.
Perth is growing at record speed these days with waterfront construction underway, including the construction of a luxury hotel that is sure to upgrade the Perth profile. Sounds good to me, as long as they promise not to change the dining scene because, when it comes to the food, Perth is perfect.

15 of the Best Spots for Plant Based Dining in Perth
Amongst the best dietary advice ever given is this from food and sustainability writer Michael Pollan: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants." Follow this healthy eating mantra, add the words, "organic and fresh", and you're guaranteed a detoxed, energised body within a few short weeks.
Fremantle has taken the lead in the burgeoning plant-based cafe scene, with the rest of Perth and surrounding suburbs catching on fast. Along with dedicated vegan and vegetarian eateries, most restaurants now offer these options to allow friends with a mix of tastes to eat together happily. Gone are the days when vegans and vegetarians were marginalised with, perhaps, one menu option, if they were lucky.
This list is by no means comprehensive, but provides a snapshot of some of the best places to go for truly delicious plant-based cuisine in Perth and Fremantle. Once you're hooked, look out for Vegan Cuisine Month occurring through February, when Perth will celebrate vegan cuisine and enthusiasts will share recipes.
Perth & Northbridge Highlights
Little Bird Cafe Address: 100 Lake Street, Northbridge Opening Times: 8.00am-3.00pm every day
You only have to check out the @littlebirdcafe Instagram feed to be motivated to visit. This cosy courtyard cafe in the heart of Northbridge serves food every bit as delicious as it looks. The menu is dedicated to vegan and vegetarian cuisine, with gluten-free, dairy-free and paleo options, and is especially popular for imaginative breakfasts, tasty sweet treats, smoothies, and great coffee or chai with various milks.
Even more appealing is the cafe's dedication to offering long-term unemployed people the chance to learn barista and baking skills. So when you sit back in the recently refurbished, dog-friendly courtyard this summer, you're not only eating healthy, but paying it forward too.
Flora & Fauna Address: 70 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge Opening Times: Tuesday-Friday 7.30am-2.00pm, weekends 8.30am-2.30pm

Settle at a long table indoors or, if it's not too windy, out on the deck overlooking the Swan River. Elizabeth Quay has evolved around this amazing vegetarian cafe, a favourite with locals for many years and now getting lots of attention from visitors to the waterfront development.
The most unusual aspect of Annalakshmi is payment. With a commitment to hospitality, guests are invited to pay for their meal with a donation of their choice as they leave, simply guided by their hearts. Please give generously - the food is worth it!

What are the desserts you must try in Perth?
1. Anzac Biscuits
Since World War 1, Anzac biscuits have long been associated with the Australian and New
Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), as they kept well during the long journey to the battlefield. This
sweet biscuit, popular across both Australia and New Zealand, is made up of oats, flour,
golden syrup, sugar, butter, baking soda, boiling water, and (optional) desiccated coconut.
Due to a law in both countries about the use of the term Anzac, these biscuits are protected
from any alteration to the original recipe in order to be referred to and sold as Anzac biscuits
Pavlova is the ultimate, mouth-watering and one of the best among the traditional Australian
desserts. Cased in the delicate meringue, marshmallow-soft from the inside and crisp from
outside, topped with the layer of fresh fruit and whipped cream. The dessert was named with
the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova in the 1920s. The fruit products used in the dessert varies
from passion fruit, kiwi fruit, berries, and mango.
3. Caramel Slice
The caramel slices, currently a clip in different bakeries all around in the country and foremost
appeared in the cookery book released in the 1970s. This dessert is full with a yummy base of
thick biscuit, a wide layer of soft and buttery caramel plus an outside layer of rich and dark
chocolate. The caramel slice is simple but tasteful. Best served cold.
4. Pink Lamington Jelly Cakes
Enthused by the lamington, this version of dessert is more similar to the whoopie pie however
with the delicious and signature tastes of chocolate, jam, and coconut. Who can refuse a slice
of this when it has got all the good things? Just look at the picture above. Will you not be
tempted to cut out a slice for you. The first layer of jelly plops when you cut through it with

The Lamington and marshmallow mousse trifles are the most favorable dish for the kids. The
great combination of lamington fingers and the marshmallows offers a robust and appetizing
flavor to this dessert and trifle for kids.
The iconic and delicious Tim Tam is known all over the world. Featuring with two dark
chocolate burst biscuits sandwiched mutually with the layer of creamy layer of chocolate.
There are a diversity of cream flavors to be enjoyed such as white chocolate, salted caramel,

7. Chocolate Crackle
Chocolate crackle is made up of the cocoa, coconut oil, sugar, and the Kellogg’s Rice Bubbles,

of kid’s birthday parties, but they are also known as best to try Australian dessert.

Giant Picnic cake is just similar to the delicious chocolate bar which is a gigantic mouthful of
nutty, chewy, caramel, creamy goodness, but through the addition of plenty of cake inside it!

has got all the good things inside.
9. Jelly Slice
A well-kept top secret from all over the world is the New Zealand and Australian dessert, the
delicious jelly slice. The jelly slice consists of three attractive yet appetizing layers, such as

Australia's best steaks
Looking for some of Australia's best steak restaurants? Look no further.
Bellota, Melbourne It's hard not to feel the love at Bellota with dishes like a classic minute steak: a well-marbled grass-fed Black Angus Scotch topped with herb butter, and served with fries and organic rocket dressed with a Champagne and mustard vinaigrette, or the benchmark vitello tonnato (a Hafner signature from Gertrude Street Enoteca) with thin slices of red wine-poached veal dressed with a superbly salty tuna, caper, anchovy, lemon juice, mayo, parmesan and Sherry vinegar sauce.
Bistro Guillaume, Perth Lurid splashes of lime green, big harlequin floor tiles - whimsical design flourishes conjure a Champs-Élysées-in-Wonderland vibe, yet Bistro Guillaume has the substance to match its considerable style. The menu channels the bourgeois food beloved by chef Guillaume Brahimi, but mark-ups are more fine-diner than local bistro. Fortunately, salade Niçoise packing thick oblongs of rare tuna, and winning takes on steak tartare and other classics help justify the price tag. Main courses such as wagyu rib-eye for two and pan-fried whiting with peas and speck are big on both provenance and skill.
Rockpool Bar & Grill, Sydney To call Bar & Grill a steakhouse would be an undersell. If the Art Deco grandeur of the dining room or the precise service of the Mad Men-esque wait-staff don't clue you in, the poster-sized menu will. You'll want to invest some dollars in the big-ticket aged steaks (wagyu, grain-fed, grass-fed), and in something storied from the 3,200-odd-bottle wine list.
Bar Alto, Brisbane Lodged in a former powerhouse reborn as a performing arts complex, Bar Alto has sandblasted brick walls and a heritage-chic vibe, while the adjoining deck overlooking the Brisbane River is a terrific place to enjoy the subtropics. Service here is prompt - staff are used to ticketholders popping in for a bowl of pasta and a glass of wine en route to a show, but there are plenty of other diners settling in for the long haul and making the most of the ambience. Modern Italian is the ticket on the menu, and there's no going past an 800-gram T-bone steak.
Remi De Provence, Hobart Remi de Provence is a mirror to Remi Bancal's story. After a stint as a sommelier in Sydney and Melbourne - witness the excellent wine advice and the encyclopedic list - he decamped to Tasmania. He developed close connections with local producers and has a family garden that provides some of the restaurant's produce, such as the raspberries served with nougat glacé in the summer. But it's his French heritage that defines the restaurant, which means the best way to eat here is to stay with bistro classics such as steak tartare, grilled Cape Grim steak with béarnaise sauce, or anything that has been slowly braised.
The Elbow Room, McLaren Vale From new digs on the approach to McLaren Vale, tucked behind a 19th-century cellar door, The Elbow Room's generous plates take centre stage in a laid-back, modestly decorated space with views of young vines. A slab of steak with porcini butter and hand-cut chips will satisfy hearty appetites and leave you wanting more.
Bistro Dom, Adelaide On a busy CBD street shared by several high-profile restaurants, Bistro Dom holds its own with confidence, personality and good service. The quality of the ingredients, especially the produce grown for the restaurant, lifts it a peg. An organic Woakwine steak features bone marrow on the side and a tasty salt gleaned from retired wine barrels.
Black Cow Bistro, Launceston It might be cattle in the style of the Lascaux cave paintings that look down at you from the walls of this converted Art Deco butcher shop, but it's grass-fed, dry-aged Tasmanian beef that's on the plate. The service at Black Cow Bistrow is switched on and professional, while the room buzzes nightly with tourists and locals. The menu is definitively steakhouse, though there's a soupçon of Asian influence in the side of piquant house-made kimchi and the fragrant lemongrass broth with prawn dumplings.
Eightysix, Canberra In hip city-side Braddon, audacious Eightysix is the dining equivalent of social media. Gen Y is all over the joint. Tablet-tapping, content-uploading hipsters share their love of the sharp, minimalist fit-out. The floor crew riff happily with patrons, their banter as unfiltered as the average tweet. And everything is shared - from the inner workings of the kitchen to the tasting plates chalked on the blackboard menu. The hand-cut steak tartare moves quickly.
Prime, Sydney This sandstone-walled, dimly lit basement under the Westin was once where mail trucks pulled into Sydney's GPO. Now the loading bay primarily disgorges beef carcasses - MSA-certified, hormone-free, grass- and grain-fed wagyu, Black Angus and Angus-Hereford cross sirloins, rumps, rib-eyes and T-bones, variously aged and weighted. Prime is unequivocal "feed the man meat" territory, where big white plates proffer prestige-quality, accurately seared cuts, presented with set sides of potatoes and sauce.
